Bone grafts and synthetic bone substitutes, which are commonly used in orthopedic surgery, vary considerably in their imaging appearance: Autografts and allografts have high opacity and high attenuation on initial postoperative radiographs and CT scans and vary in appearance on MR images, whereas bone graft substitutes more commonly have low attenuation and appear opaque only if they are mixed with allograft material.
