The non-filled bladder: Techniques and applications in sonographic evaluation of the early second trimester pregnancy

Early sonographic prenatal screening and amniocentesis in the second trimester of pregnancy can be performed more efficiently and easily with the patient's bladder empty. An understanding of the anatomy in patients with an empty bladder allows adequate assessment of fetal age, placental localization, and uterine abnormalities. The relatively anterior position of the uterine contents in the patient with an empty bladder allows scanning with higher resolution transducers.
