Our study has shown the typical CT patterns of lobar and segmental collapse, as well as the variant appearances. CT images have been helpful in understanding the many variations in the appearance of right middle lobe collapse. We have used CT to clarify the pathologic anatomy in atypical peripheral collapse of the upper lobes. CT has been useful in analyzing indirect signs of collapse, such as the upper triangle sign and the juxtaphrenic peak. Perhaps most important from a clinical standpoint, CT greatly facilitates the diagnosis of collapse around masses and collapse obscured by pleural fluid.
