A technique has been presented that combines high resolution CT with flexibility in patient positioning and makes possible direct imaging of the petrous bone in the majority of known otoradiologic planes. A new plane called the semilongitudinal plane, which appears to be useful for imaging the cochlea, the external auditory meatus and the surgical approaches to the middle ear has been introduced. With this technique, it is possible to optimize the visualization of both bone and soft tissue details in the temporal bone without making use of multiplanar reconstruction techniques, which degrade image quality. Thus, the technique described facilitates the identification of normal and pathologic anatomy.
